Case Studies in Failures and Ethics for Engineering Educators Workshop

Summer 2003

The purpose of TCFE is to develop practices and procedures to reduce the number of such failures, to disseminate information on failures and their causes, to provide guidelines for conducting failure investigations, and to provide guidelines for ethical conduct in forensic engineering.  Authorized in July 1985, the Technical Council on Forensic Engineering (TCFE) applies engineering principles to the investigation of failures or other performance problems. The investigations may involve testimony on the findings before a court of law or other judicial forum, when required. Failures are not all catastrophic, such as when a building or bridge collapses, include facilities or parts of facilities that do not perform as intended by the owner, design professional, or constructor.

Our Mission

To develop practices and procedures to reduce the number of such failures; to disseminate information on failures and their causes; to provide guidelines for conducting failure investigations; to encourage research and education in forensic engineering; and to encourage ethical conduct in forensic engineering practice.

An Invitation

The Technical Council on Forensic Engineering continually seeks active participation by individuals interested in advancing forensic engineering pursuits. If you are interested in sharing your experience and talents with other engineers working in this field, please click TCFE/ASCE.

Council Activities

The council and the committees meet two times per year. Our fall meeting is generally held in conjunction with ASCE's national convention, and our spring meeting is held at varying locations in the United States. The meetings are open to the public.

Next Committee Meeting - October 18, 2003
San Diego, California

Awards

TCFE annually presents a Forensic Engineering Award to the individual who has made significant contributions to the field of forensic engineering. In addition, an annual award is presented for the best paper published in the Journal of Performance of Constructed Facilities.
